Entering the season finale at Road Atlanta with a shot at defending his 2021 MX-5 Cup championship, a mechanical DNF in Race 1 relegated Wagner to 3rd in the standings. In Race 2, Wagner rebounded to finish 2nd to end the season, narrowly missing out on the win.
Wagner came into the finale 3rd in the points, within striking distance of the title and having made up a significant amount of points at the previous rounds. With all of the championship contenders running in the at the front, Wagner fell out of the race early with a mechanical failure. The DNF left Wagner out of the championship battle heading into Race 2.
In the final race of the season, Wagner started in the 5th spot, and quickly worked his way up to the lead. Running in the front for the first part of the race, the field began shuffling as the top 8 broke away through the middle phase of the race. In the final minutes, the top runners swapped spots multiple times, and Wagner found himself in 2nd when he took the white flag. As the leaders drafted down the final straight, Wagner challenged for the lead, but ultimately had to settle for 2nd.
The season still ended on somewhat of a high note for Wagner and Spark Performance team, earning 3 podiums in the final 4 races and still rebounding after a tough start to the season to end the championship in 3rd. Wagner and the team now set their sights on the 2023 Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup season, which kicks off at Daytona in January.
